1) About The Islanders
Maybe I could add a story here. Yes? Or maybe not? Either way, this is an entirely new story. After all... this is your story.
An Islanders can possibly be one of the easiest things to be, but at the same time, the hardest thing to be.
Why is this guide created?
Maybe people would like to try out this so-called thing named as an "Islander". However, are they exactly sure on what to do as an Islander? If not, then this guide can possibly help them!
What is an Islander?
Many people could be asking this, and it is indeed that a lot of the Maple Story population does not know what an Islander is, nor have they heard of it. What an Islander is is a character that practically lives in Maple Island. In other words, they're there forever!!!
What do you do on Maple Island?
Truthfully, you have a variety of options to choose from. Someone's having a lot of trouble with their character! Warn them about what they should and should not do. Help them! If you have a lot of items that are worthless, be nice and give a donation instead of selling it for a simple 1500 Mesos or whatever.
Another option is one of the biggest things that could be taking place in Maple Island. Of course, this can apply for Victoria Island anyway. A great habit is hunting. The EXP you get will eventually be nearly worthless, so why not get something you despirately need and hunt for it? There is a section on what you should do here.
Of course, another thing could be competition. Look at Soapy's Beginner's List topic and see what islanders are there! Can you compete for #1?
You said that this was easy and hard. Explain please.
First off, the easy part is getting strong and nearly vanishing everything on the island! Why? Truthfully, your strongest enemies are Orange Mushrooms. Right. The Mushrooms that give you their caps in return of their death. That's the easy part! Eventually, you'll be able to kill them in one hit with ease.
The hard part, now, comes the leveling. Again, the EXP you will obtain from these creatures will be nearly nothing. Around your mid-30s level, the most EXP you can get will be less than 0.01% per kill. Not only is training a hazard, but sometimes you could be killing tens of thousands of Orange Mushrooms or any enemy for that matter, yet you have not found what you're looking for. Hunting could be fun, but of course, it could lose your interest here.
The EXP I get will be that low? Won't I get bored of training?
Eventually, people normally tend to get bored around level 20 on Maple Island. Maybe they want to get to Victoria Island. As usual, this game requires patience due to the leveling system, and leveling on Maple Island only makes it worst. If you're bored, try to make some friends there, or help out.
2) Pros and Cons
Pros:
- You can actually get rich. Eventually you might gather the necessary equipment, that you nearly have to spend another potion! But... who knows. Either way, you get much more mesos than you would spend, either way.
- You barely have to worry about KSers! The only time where you have to be alert for KSers is if there's another great Islander that's wanting to take over.
- Helping out might be good, so you can donate some things! In return, they might be your friend in which you can talk to on your journey on Maple Island!
- You can give out free fame to people! And you can defame as well... but hey, think of the newbies!
- You can be famous maybe...?
Cons:
- Of course, the gameplay will get very repetitive and boring around level 20.
- EXP train will most likely be at Orange Mushrooms FOREVER!
- Likely not to get famed, except from other Islanders.
- You might often get spammed with questions that are frequently asked, or maybe even be stalked by a newbie. This can lead to ANNOYANCE!
3) The Guide
Well you've read what you need to know practically, but here's where the action comes in! This guide will provide what's recommended as an Islander.
3a) Creating Your Islander
Your Islander can have whatever looks, of course, and even though you're permanently on Maple Island, your statistics are still an important factor. These are the recommended stats.
STR: 10 or higher
DEX: 4/5 (Preferly 4)
INT: 4/5 (Preferly 4)
LCK: Anywhere from 4-7
Super powers!?
Without strength, you'll be a weakling that will take 10 hits to kill an Orange Mushroom. Try to get as much as possible here in the beginning! I would normally prefer anything 10 or up.
Why am I inaccurate?
Even with four DEX, your accuracy will still be enough to hit an Orange Mushroom at all times. The rest of the points in DEX are pointless. The only useful factors of DEX are mildly increasing your avoidability, which you can use Luck for, and your damage is slightly more stabled. As discovered while writing this guide, your DEX can possibly be increased by 10% Shoe Jump scrolls.
Are you calling me an idiot because I have no intelligence!?
You are actually smart. You are not in need for intelligence. Think of this as a Permanent Beginner or a Warrior. Actually, think of it as ANY character but a Magician. You'd be better off wasting points into even DEX... But don't.
Can I be lucky?
If you don't know already, Luck does not help you find items. However, once you start easily getting One-Hit KOs on Orange Mushrooms, this is your best bet to dump points into. The reason why is so you can have an easier time avoiding the creatures on the island. This can make you nearly invincible! Well... not really, but you'll be pretty quick for them.
Don't I need intelligence for the skills?
No intelligence is needed for any of the three beginner skills. Three Snails has a set damage, so even if you have level 1 on the skill, but 100 INT put into the points, you'll still do 10 damage! Recovery heals your HP, but again, it has a set recovery rate. As for Nimble Body, that has a set speed added on temporarily, regardless of INT. The only useful thing about INT is very mildly increasing your recovery rate. Overall, it's useful for magicians only! See the skills list for information on skill distribution.
3b) The journey!!!
Well congratulations! You can now start your journey as an Islander! Might as well take the time to do the quest, otherwise what else will you do? Just power-train 24/7? Quests can get you nifty rewards, especially EXP. This can give you a boost in leveling up your character.
At around level 12, you might be able to take on Orange Mushrooms, depending on your equipment. If you have not found at least a Blue One-Lined T-Shirt, then you're better off sticking with snails until you find one or something. Remember, hunting is an important factor! It's a key to survival on Maple Island!
As soon as you get what you think is right, then you can do whatever you want on the island freely. Level 15? Give off your random fame of the day! Fight Orange Mushies! Hunt from Snails! Just... don't leave Maple Island.
3c) Hunting Guide
Again, you are very lonely on this island, so you need to find proper equipment to survive! Here are the recommended equipment:
Name of Item - Requirements - Statistics - Dropped By
Blue One-Lined T-Shirt - Level 11, Male - 9-13 WD (Default: 11) - Blue Snails
Red Striped T-Shirt - Level 11, Female - 9-13 WD (Default: 11) - Blue Snails
Ice Jeans - Level 16 - 11-15 WD (Default: 13), 2-4 MP (Default: 3) - Shrooms
Leather Purse - Level 15, 20 STR - 30-38 WA (Default: 34) - Red Snails
White Gomushin - Level 11 - 3-5 WD (Default: 4), 2-4 Speed (Default: 3) - Orange Mushroom
Double Axe - Level 10 - 24-30 WA (Default: 27) - Orange Mushroom
Of course, there are scrolls that are useful to even you!
Name of Item - Statistics - Dropped by
Scroll for Helm for Def. (10%) - WD +5, MD +3, Accuracy +1 - Green Snail
Scroll for Helm for Def. (60%) - WD +2, MD +2 - Orange Mushroom
Scroll for Shoes for Jump (10%) - Jump +5, DEX +3, Speed +1 - Orange Mushroom
3d) Training Areas
As usual, your in need for training areas, because you can't just get massive EXP from fighting Orange Mushrooms at level 1. Every class needs to start out small!
Level 1-5 - Green Snails - This is guarenteed your best training area from this level range. Eventually, you can One-Hit KO these for 3 EXP as opposed to Blue Snail's two hits for 4 EXP (rounding that to around 2 EXP/hit), or maybe Red Snail's eight hits for 8 EXP (1 EXP/hit). Everyone thinks that training at other areas other than this is faster. Well you're wrong.
Level 6-11 - Blue Snails, Red Snails, Shrooms, and Quests! - Since you most likely have the strength and skills necessary, you might as well start with the quests. This can result in very fast EXP, and you get your hat randomly, which increases your Def a decent deal. This saves money! Speaking of money, some of the quests such as Mia's Orange Mushroom quest or Pio's Garbage collecting quest can help get a small amount of money. Not much, but better than nothing!
My recommendation is to try to take on the 10 Orange Mushrooms at level 9 or so. Even though you can do it later, you can start early and gather 10 Orange Mushroom Caps for Biggs for a chance to win either a Razor, or a Fruit Knife (prefered, so if you get this, good job! The chances of obtaining these two are random.)
Level 11+ - Open Field - Well you have the stuff to do just about anything! Before taking on Orange Mushrooms, it's prefered that you try to find your level 11 Shirt to save potions. Hunt if necessary, or even help newbies on the island. What you do is up to you!
3e) Skills
You are given a total of nine slots for skills, but you can only use six of them! What are you going to do? There are many combinations into distributing your skills, so choose wisely out of these skills.
Three Snails
Level 1 - Uses 10 MP along with a (Green) Snail Shell. Deals 10 damage.
Level 2 - Uses 25 MP along with a Blue Snail Shell. Deals 25 damage.
Level 3 - Uses 40 MP along with a Red Snail Shell. Deals 40 damage.
Recovery
Level 1 - Uses 10 MP to heal 24 HP in 30 seconds.
Level 2 - Uses 20 MP to heal 48 HP in 30 seconds.
Level 3 - Uses 30 MP to heal 72 HP in 30 seconds.
(Cool time of this skill is 10 minutes before another use.)
Nimble Feet
Level 1 - Uses 10 MP to add 10 Speed for 4 seconds.
Level 2 - Uses 15 MP to add 15 Speed for 8 seconds.
Level 3 - Uses 20 MP to add 20 Speed for 12 seconds.
Flayd's comments
Three Snails
This skill is a little useless, but somewhat useful as well. The MP usage is very large, especially if you're a beginner that NEVER has MP potions, since it is impossible to obtain an MP potion on Maple Island. However, you can have an enemy follow you by throwing a shell at it, maybe even killing it. That seems to be one of the most useful things of it, considering you wouldn't have to walk back and forth. However, most of the time, your weapon damage would probably be much better.
Recovery
This might be one of your most used skills in the game as an Islander. Basically, as time goes by when you use this skill, your HP recovers every five seconds six times. This could lead into saving a lot of money and potions! Especially useful if you prefer power-training instead of sitting on the Relaxer every few minutes. Max this out!!!
Nimble Feet
Of course, many people might not want this skill because they say "Why waste some MP to have some faster speed for 12 seconds?" Well that is true, but I guess it's just to catch up on the enemies, and make sure that they don't get away! But to put points onto this is up to you.
4) Conclusion
This is actually my first guide on Maple Story. However, I do hope you're prepared on what to do as an Islander, now! Basically just (try to) have fun on Maple Island, and aim for the highest Islander ranking of all! If you have any questions, feel free to PM them to me.
Happy Mapling!
